Background

Publication flood in medical research

As in all medical fields, the number of publications rises exponentially. For SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) the daily increase in research articles is relatively low with 8 papers per day. The published knowledge hidden in natural language articles is not accessible in a structured way. Therefore it is time-consuming and error-prone to evaluate the preclinical evidence that a specific treatment could be effective in human patients.

Discrepancy of basic research and clinical translation

The publication number for basic research articles in the field of spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury is far above the number of clinical trials. None of the trials resulted in a therapy for these conditions.
